About Liquid Immersion Cooling & Our Project

Briefing

For graduating at our college we were required to take the 'Systems Projects' class where you do a project dealing with electronics, during this class we were sitting in the classroom trying to think of what kind of project we could do, when we started talking about hearing about someone cooling a computer with oil the idea just grew from there, we started looking at tons of different sites to see how others have done this sort of thing only to find that a lot of people in this world are fools, some people would use things like vegetable oil, which ....is utterly stupid seeing that its viscosity is so thick!, others would use things like distilled water....another bad idea because it corrodes things; mineral oil.....that'd work, then we saw flourinert, the stuff they use for server computers! perfect!!! if you can afford it!! ok, so we couldn't go with that, so instead we went with the next best thing, silicon oil...it's what is used to cool transformers and the like, non-conductive, non-corrosive thin like mineral oil and it doesn't evaporate/cook at a high temp, and its freezing point is lower than we could think of getting the mobo down to...oh and its actaully designed for heat extraction of electronics!

Definition

so you may be asking yourself now, what the heck am I talking about? what is liquid immersion? well here's your answers., first lets break down what it is,

first liquid...if you don't even understand what liquid is then you shouldn't even be here.

next theres immersion / submersion, which simply "The placing of an object under water or other liquid" in this case oil is used, oil is used because it can transfer the heat far faster than air can.

cooling - is the act of "Giving or suggesting relief from heat" in which we dont want in a computer, because heat slows a computer down and makes its life shorter.

Concept

ok so thats what the definition is, now here's what the concept is...

the main concept of this project is to take a computers main non-moving parts [located on the motherboard, and submerge them in oil, which is ran through a cooling device to keep the oil nice and cool

How will it be done in our project?

To ackomplish this, in our project we will first have a regular computer case, in it there is the normal parts, only difference is the motherboard is placed inside yet another case [we clal it the mobo tank] this tank is then filled with oil. there is a tube pumping this oil out of the tank and down into a freezer which will make the oil nice and cool, the cool oil is then pushed back up to the computer case and back into the mobo tank.

thermometers are placed bother in the freezer and the comptuer to watch and be sure it is doing its job, the motherboard has onboard gauges so we can watch the cpus temp, we also have 2 mroe that will go both at the surface of the oil and the other down further so we can be sure the oil is circulated properly
